About the Artist:
Frederick William Billing (1835–1914) was born in Eschwege, Germany and immigrated to the United States in the mid‑1850s. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War before establishing a brokerage firm on Wall Street. Billing later studied painting with Johann Hermann Carmiencke, a German‑American Hudson River School painter, and became known for landscapes recalling his European travels as well as scenes of New York and the American West. He eventually settled near Santa Cruz, California, where he continued painting until his death.
